Garment workers in Los Angeles make PPE in unsafe conditions

In its struggle toward containing the pandemic, the United States has seen a growing demand for personal protective equipment for local governments and businesses across the country. 

As the largest apparel manufacturing hub in the U.S., the Fashion District neighborhood in Los Angeles has taken on the challenge of manufacturing millions of masks, gowns and face shields. 

But those factories have quickly become hotbeds for the coronavirus spreading among hundreds of garment workers — many of them undocumented and underpaid.
