Former Uruguay president dies at aged 80

Former Uruguay president Tabare Vazquez died on Sunday in Montevideo of cancer at the age of 80.

Vazquez made history as the small Latin American nation’s first elected leftist leader in 2005.

He returned to office for a second term in 2015. In 2019, shortly before presidential elections, he confirmed he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
