Riding horses helps youngsters stay out of trouble in California

Americas Now

During one of the most racially-divided times in US history – there’s some positive news about race relations coming out of Southern California.

Nowadays, young Black and Hispanic men – rather than fighting each other over gang turf – can sometimes be seen riding on horseback together. Yes, on horseback. It’s something that has become a pleasant pastime for young people who might otherwise join a gang instead.

And it’s happening in the historically gang-plagued community of Compton, CA. Made famous by NWA’s rap song “Straight Outta Compton.”

The African American cowboys behind this movement say the mission is ending negative stereotypes of young black men here.

The name of these guys?  What else? The Compton Cowboys.

Mike Kirsch has the story.
