COVID-19: One year later, the virus is worse than ever in Brazil

A year after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a COVID-19 pandemic, much of the world is reporting falling numbers of cases and deaths, but in Brazil the crisis is worse than it’s ever been.

Brazil is now reporting more daily fatalities than any other country—a development that  scientists blame on a new contagious variant, a slow vaccination campaign and a disastrous reluctance to employ and enforce mitigation measures.
