Just last month, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, known as ASEAN, with a face-to-face meeting in Chongqing. The Chinese foreign minister pledged further vaccine assistance to the 10 countries battling the coronavirus pandemic. China is working to improve ties in the region, while the United States is hoping to restore its credibility after four years of the Trump administration. Both countries are engaged in geopolitical competition in the region.
