The state of Rio de Janeiro has the second highest COVID-19 mortality rate in Brazil after Sao Paulo, and cases are on the rise since the spread of the Delta variant. 

More than four million people have contracted the disease. Seventeen months into the pandemic, Brazilian health authorities have launched a mass vaccination campaign in Mare, the city’s largest cluster of favelas.
