Mexico’s stalled initiative to investigate former political leaders

World Today

An effort to investigate former political leaders in Mexico appears to have stopped even before it could get started.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador held a national referendum this past Sunday to ask the country a rather oddly-worded question: “Do you agree, or not, that necessary constitutional and legal action be taken, to begin a process which sheds light on the political decisions taken in previous years by political actors, which leads to justice and the rights of the victims?”

According to initial results of a referendum over the weekend, the measure fell short of the required turnout.

However, those who did vote overwhelmingly supported the effort.
