Afro-Colombian activist works to lift of Black community

World Today

It’s hard to know the true number of Blacks who live in Colombia.

Data over the years have shown descendants from Africa make up anywhere between 6-25 percent of the population.

Part of the problem is poor accounting by government census takers. Afro-Colombians see the exclusion as yet another example of racism, calling the undercount ‘statistical genocide.’

What is clear is that this minority group faces disproportionate levels of poverty and social exclusion.
