California governor wins recall election

Californians have overwhelming rejected a recall effort against Governor Gavin Newsom, with almost 64 percent demanding he be kept in office.

Tuesday’s special election cost the state nearly $276 million, leading to calls for a reform of the recall election laws.

Its result has emboldened Governor Newsom ahead of next year’s scheduled gubernatorial election, but it’s also highlighted the growing divisions in California.
