One hundred years after the completion of the Panama Canal, Panamanian authorities are facing new challenges posed by human-made climate change and the deforestation in the surrounding areas. Because of changing weather patterns and extreme precipitations and droughts, the canal is in danger of drying up. Even in one of the regions in the world with the most precipitation, the deforestation has reduced the territory’s capacity to generate and retain water. Harris Whitbeck has the story.
