Police investigate Buffalo shooting as a hate crime

As investigations continue at the crime scene of a racially-motivated mass shooting that took 10 lives in Buffalo, New York, the U.S. Justice Department says it’s investigating the incident as a hate crime, and an act of “racially motivated violent extremism.”

An attorney representing the victims’ families rejected any suggestions around mental health, saying the attack was clearly an act of domestic terrorism perpetrated by a young white supremacist.

The incident has spurred a national debate around ideologies of hatred and racism.
