Launched in 1948, the Organization of American States is considered the primary regional platform for high-level policy discussions and decision-making on the strategic affairs for the Western Hemisphere.

U.S. still works on final invitation list for Summit of the Americas

The Ninth Summit of the Americas ​is set to open next week in Los Angeles.

It’s meant to bring together all the leaders of the Organization of American States to reinforce ties and discuss multilateral initiatives to address common issues.

But this year, some of those ties are being tested.

At least 10 Latin American nations – those belonging to the ALBA Bloc of left-leaning nations — reject the U.S. decision to exclude Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela at this year’s Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles.

Those countries say the Biden administration is acting in a discriminatory manner that is “unilateral, arbitrary, and politically motivated.”
