The history of Juneteenth

Communities across America are celebrating the country’s new federal holiday – Juneteenth.

It was on this day in 1865 that slaves in Texas learned they were free, the last in the country to hear the news.

The day is being marked by parades, barbeques, and family gatherings, but some say it should also serve as a reminder that deep inequalities still exist in America.

CGTN’s Toni Waterman spoke with a local Austin, Texas historian about the history.
