Joe Biden delivered a scathing speech to world leaders gathering in New York on Wednesday, condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine and accusing it of “shamelessly” violating the U.N. Charter.

The U.S. president took to the podium just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a partial military mobilization, calling up hundreds of thousands of more soldiers to join the fight.

Despite many member states accusing Russia of violating the UN charter, the Security Council has failed to take major action.

But the crisis has highlighted the importance of the UN’s humanitarian work and the influence of the Secretary-General.

The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) opened on Tuesday, and its new president urged world leaders to work together and bridge “deep divides” in order to address humanity’s most important problems, such as the conflict in Ukraine.

World leaders at this year’s United Nations General Assembly are expected to appeal for solutions to the worst cost of living crisis in a generation.

Earlier this year, the UN launched a special panel to target rising food prices and helped negotiate a deal to free up grain trapped by fighting in Ukraine.

It’s now hoping to take on energy companies to bring down fuel costs – but analysts say that’s a much tougher challenge.

World leaders will descend on the United Nations headquarters in New York this week – their first face-to-face gathering since 2019.
