CGTN America is the DC-based hub of China Global Television Network. We report news and current affairs, broadcasting daily as part of a live 24/7 broadcast operation. We also offer online content across social media, websites and other digital applications. Watched by hundreds of millions around the world each day, CGTN puts an emphasis on quality storytelling to enable audiences to “See the difference.”

The DC General News team produces and outputs CGTN newscasts as well as special coverage and segments and contributes daily to our digital content.

Background to the role:

In this role you will work as directed by the Executive Producer, to fulfill the editorial mission of the team and its work within the overall operation of CGTN. You will also be directed by other senior staff.

As a senior member of the team, you will be expected to mentor and develop others and to bring the full extent of your experience and knowledge to bear on the role to the benefit of the entire team. Your expertise in specific areas including – international news knowledge, copy editing, writing, planning and special projects will help serve the mission of CGTN-America.

Job objectives:

• · Lead a team of producers, writers, creative, guest booking to supervise hourly bulletins, and breaking news.
• · Edit the work of others, improve copy and content and be part of a strict video approvals process.
• · Strong understanding of China with the ability to see both sides of any issue and translate complex stories into everyday language.
• · Write accurate, compelling and concise news scripts and other written material for broadcast and digital platforms while adhering to CGTN editorial policies and style guide.
• · Regularly represent general news at daily and weekly editorial meetings as needed.
• · Be able to work irregular hours and occasional extended schedule as the news cycle demands.
• · Proficiency or ability to learn the latest digital technology and systems across websites and social media platforms.
• · Excel at work within a culturally and ethnically diverse staff.

Who you are:

An experienced TV news junkie who is confident working in a high-pressure fast-paced collaborative environment. You should be curious and sharp and able to operate proactively and work individually
or as part of a team. Creative but accurate with special attention to detail. Able to take and give clear instructions under deadline pressure. Flexible and able to change directions quickly.

Essential:

• · 10+ years’ experience in journalism, preferably with an international broadcaster.
• · Ability to deliver content to tight deadlines under the pressure of a live news environment while adhering to company policies.
• · Ability to thrive under pressure.
• · Keen interest in the current affairs and culture of China, The U.S. and Latin America.
• · Ability to work independently but seek guidance where necessary.
• · Awareness of journalism ethics and legal principles
• · Excel at work within a culturally and ethnically diverse staff.
• Desirable:
• · International languages especially Mandarin and Spanish.
• · Use of digital tools including analytics.
• · Knowledge of television production platforms
• · Time spent in China.
