Brazil cracks down on illegal gold mining that has impacted indigenous groups

After shocking pictures emerged earlier this year, of Brazil’s Yanomami Indigenous people suffering malnutrition and other health issues, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared a public health emergency.

He also vowed to clear Yanomami lands of illegal miners whose operations are blamed for destroying their native way of life.
