Jim Spellman

Jim Spellman is a CGTN-America Correspondent based in Washington DC.

Spellman joined CGTN-America in 2013 and covers a variety of subjects including Intelligence, Defense, Science and Technology.

Before coming to CGTN-America he was a journalist at CNN for over a decade, most recently posted in Denver, Colorado. He reported for CNN, CNN International, HLN and CNN.COM.

Spellman has covered the legalization of marijuana, the tragic Aurora theater shooting and the 2008 and 2012 elections. He specialized in disaster reporting: covering the 2010 earthquake in Haiti as well as Hurricanes, Wildland Fires, Floods, Blizzards and Tornadoes

In 2005 he was part of the CNN team that won the prestigious Peabody Award for coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the 2005 Alfred DuPont- Columbia University Award for coverage of the Tsunami in South Asia.

Before beginning his journalism career Spellman played drums an alternative rock band Velocity Girl, touring the world and recording albums, winning. The group was awarded a Platinum record for their contribution to the soundtrack for the 1995 movie Clueless.

He is a graduate of the University of Maryland.
