Rich Murphy is Executive Producer of Digital Content at CGTN America.

He was hired in November 2013 to ramp up the digital operation at the DC bureau. He successfully launched livestreaming of newscasts and the CGTN-America.com website.

Starting in 2006, Murphy was the senior web producer at WTTG Fox 5 in Washington, D.C. He took the position after a year as the station’s managing editor.

Murphy’s career path began in video editing. He started in 1984 at WXFL in Tampa as an editor trainee. Then he picked up a camera and was a photojournalist for the next 16 years in Tampa, Charlotte and again in Tampa. Along the way he has worked as a one-man-band reporter, assignment editor, chief photojournalist, special projects producer, satellite coordinator, field producer, assignment editor, executive producer of special projects and managing editor. He worked in Tampa at WFLA from 1990-2001 and WTSP from 2001-2004.

He was part of the “pre-nuptial” team made up of WFLA, Tampa Tribune & Tampa Bay Online managers as they planned the convergence of the three platforms in 1999. Murphy helped train Tribune reporters how to produce packages for TV. He also trained still photojournalists how to shoot and edit videotape. WFLA photojournalists now carry digital still cameras and often capture images for the Tribune & TBO.

Murphy was one of the first adjunct professors of the University of South Florida’s Multimedia Class that produced projects for all three platforms. He has taught sessions at The Poynter Institute, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Press Photographers Association, the University of South Florida and Visual Edge. Awards include an Emmy, numerous Associated Press, Green Eyeshade, Society of Professional Journalists and NPPA awards. He also taught Online Journalism for three semesters as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland.
