Timeline: US, EU sanctions against Russia

The United States and European Union have levied sanctions against individual Russians and companies over Moscow’s alleged destabilization of Ukraine. In retaliation, Russia has banned most food imports from the West for one year.

The U.S. has been reluctant to slap Russia with broader sanctions, having pledged to present a united front with Europe. Because of divisions among EU member states, and fears of a Russian economic backlash, the 28-nation European Union is carefully calibrating its response to avoid damage to the overall Russian economy.

Broader sanctions coming?

The U.S. and EU are considering the possibility of imposing broader sanctions on Russia after the destruction of Malaysia Airlines MH17 —allegedly shot out of the sky with a Russian-made surface-to-air missile on July 17, killing all 298 onboard. Western powers blame the shoot down on eastern Ukraine’s separatist militias.

Russia’s response

In retaliation for western sanctions, Russia instituted a ban on Western food imports, including all imports of meat, fish, milk and milk products, and fruits and vegetables from the United States, the European Union, Australia, Canada and Norway. The ban will last for one year.

Russia claims the latest round of EU sanctions endanger the fight against international terrorism, and accuses the United States of spreading lies about Russia’s alleged involvement in MH17 crash.

Igor Sechin, the chairman of Russia’s largest oil company, Rosneft Oil, has called the U.S. sanctions against the state-controlled energy company “illegal.”
