When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion two years ago, many states including California rushed to protect a woman’s right to abortion. California has also passed several laws to protect the privacy of people from out of state seeking abortion services in California, as well as healthcare providers themselves. According to the Guttmacher Institute, California’s healthcare providers carried out more than 178,000 legal abortions in 2023, a 16 percent increase from 2020. Governor Newsom has also signed a law allowing Arizona’s abortion providers to provide their services in California for their traveling patients. Ediz Tiyansan reports.
