Broadening the definition of petroleum products that are processed is the key to increasing U.S. oil export potential, because such products are not subject to the 1975 ban on crude oil exports.

According to a Citigroup analyst, this may lead to over one million barrels of exported crude oil without a change in the law. There are already many who say that the law should be changed to include the U.S. with Mexico, Norway and Canada, who are already net exporters of crude oil.
