Iraq’s Kurds seek greater independence

Kurds in Iraq are seeking greater independence from the government. The relative peace and economic success in the region has declined since attacks by the Islamic State.

Despite political dysfunction in Iraq, the Kurdish region has remained relatively calm and experienced significant economic growth. Although sectarian violence characterizes much of Iraq, Christians and Muslims live peacefully together in the Kurdish region.

However, since the recent attacks by IS, the oil business in the region has declined 75 percent.
