The U.S. has launched a new campaign in Honduras to reduce the rapid flow of unaccompanied child immigrants from Central America. More than 60,000 children have been caught entering the country so far this year.
The U.S. government has put pressure on Central American countries to handle the immigration issue at its source. One effort it has made is changing the mission of a Honduran police unit, completely funded and organized by the U.S. government. The Tigres, as they are called, were originally created to hunt down drug gangs. Now, they are looking for children attempting to make the dangerous journey to cross the U.S. border. They have caught more than 160 young people trying to reach the U.S.
This crackdown could have serious future impact on the young people in Honduras. The country has the highest murder rate in the world, and two thirds of its children currently live in poverty.
Creating employment opportunities and security for the children who would usually leave the country is going to be difficult for the cash-strapped Honduran government.
