Flooding in India forces thousands to flee

India’s Prime Minister got a first-hand look at the devastation that heavy monsoon rains have caused in Kashmir. Flood waters have forced thousands to flee the region. More rain is expected and that’s a concern for rescue workers struggling to reach many still trapped by floodwaters.

The flood in Jammu and Kashmir’s capital Srinagar is going from bad to worse. CCTV America’s Shweta Bajaj reports.

The water entered most residential areas including the army area, forcing desperate residents to call for help from their rooftops. About 2,500 villages were cut off completely. Power has been lost in a number of areas and public infrastructure has been badly damaged. Telephone lines were not working either making it difficult for people to contact their relatives in the state, especially in Srinagar.

India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, travelled to Srinagar to take stock of the situation and declared the disaster a national calamity.
