Netanyahu launches new authority to fight cyber attacks

World Today

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leveled strong accusations against Iran saying Israel’s regional foe launched repeated cyber attacks during the 50-day conflict with Hamas this summer. CCTV America’s Roee Ruttenberg reports.

Netanyahu announced what he called an air force for cyberspace, a new cyber authority that will tackle the growing battlefield of viruses and malware. The move is controversial and considered unprecedented in that it wrests control of the country’s cyber-warfare strategy from the defense minister to Israel’s civilian body, under Netanyahu.

Some fear the new authority will lack the proper intelligence gathering skills to prevent attacks which could de-stabilize the country.

In announcing the new authority, Netanyahu spoke specifically of Iran which he accused of backing millions of cyber attacks on Israeli sites. Israel has also been accused of hacking Iranian sites in the past.
