Canadian CEO sentenced 15 years for corruption in Cuba

A Canadian business executive sentenced to 15 years in prison in Cuba. He was charged for seizing about $100 million worth of his company’s assets in Cuba. CCTV America’s Michael Voss reports from Havana.

This 74-year-old Canadian CEO, Cy Tokmakjian, was a pioneer of international business with Cuba. His Ontario-based company sold transportation, mining and construction equipment in Cuba.Tokmajian was arrested in 2011 and held in jail for almost three years before being charged. He was accused of bribery, fraud, tax evasion and falsifying bank documents.

Western diplomats who attended the short trial described the evidence as weak. His company called the proceeding a ‘travesty of justice’ and said the court rejected 14 of the 18 defense witness including tax experts.
