Legendary South African musician Masekela takes on New York

South African musician Hugh Masekela is hoping to hit all the right notes during his public concerts in New York City. The artist is in America to celebrate and promote his country’s arts and culture. Despite the influence his own work has had on South Africa’s fight for freedom, he feels music has lost some of its power. CCTV America’s Nick Harper reports from New York.

Legendary musician Hugh Masekela took to New York City’s Times Square for his unannounced concert conducted from the top of a double decker bus. While in New York, he also wants his voice to be heard about music’s influence on world events. Many people see Masekela’s music as a social motivator that played a prominent role during South Africa’s independence, however, he believes the power of music and a microphone has dwindled.

“Music doesn’t play that much of an important part anymore in society. But we’ve only been free 20 years and you know music was there before people so it will always come back.” he said.

He also said everyone has a part to play in fighting social problems.
