Residents of the Ukrainian town Ilovaisk have been trickling back to their ruined homes after some of the area’s bloodiest fighting took place. Even though there is a truce, the residents still lack the means to rebuild their homes.

Rebel fighters have been delivering United Nations aid kits to Ilovaisk, which is not far from the separatist stronghold Donetsk.
There are still parts of Ilovaisk that have no electricity or water. With winter approaching, aid agencies warn that people’s humanitarian needs will rise significantly.
Restoration work is underway, but local officials say rebuilding Ilovaisk could take years. The leadership of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic have promised to help people who have lost their properties as a result of the fighting. So far, no money has been allocated to people living there. This has left many wondering exactly how long it will take them to rebuild their lives.
