The Ice Bucket Challenge, this summer’s viral phenomenon, raised a total of $220 million globally as of December 12, according to ALS Association CEO Barbara Newhouse.
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a motor neuron disease, and causes progressive muscle paralysis in sufferers. To raise awareness for the condition, the challenge involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water on video, posting that video to social media, then nominating others to do the same. People can either accept the challenge or make a donation to an ALS Charity of their choice, or both.
