Zambia citizens prepare for presidential elections

Zambia presidential elections campaigning is in full swing with United Party for National Development candidate Hakainde Hichilema as one of the front runners. The country prepares for the presidential elections set to take place Tuesday. CCTV Africa’s Farai Mwakutua reported this story.

Thousands of Hakainde Hichilema’s supporters braved the rain on Sunday to attend his penultimate rally in the capital Lusaka. Hichilema has pledged to lower the cost of living in Zambia.

The businessman has enjoyed strong support from the business community and professionals, but he has also won the hearts of ordinary citizens who are pinning their hopes on him.

The change Hichilema has offered is to create jobs for those who are on the streets.

Zambia’s economy has started to slow down as the Patriotic Front government sinks deeper into debt, despite having inherited cash rich coffers.

“This Patriotic Front government in three years they have taken us back to the pre-debt relief days. So we need to put a plug in and stop the blood from oozing out,” Hichilema said.

The ruling Patriotic Front says the funds have been used to finance massive infrastructure development including new roads and universities.

Edgar Lungu, The Patriotic Front’s candidate campaigned in the copper belt on Sunday and is set to hold a final rally in Lusaka on Monday

The copper belt is an influential region in deciding election outcomes.
