Tickets for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro went on sale Tuesday  in Brazil and around the world. Sports fans can now register online to attend the first Olympics games held in South America. CCTV America’s Lucrecia Franco filed this report from Rio.

Highlights:

  • Some seven-and-a-half million tickets are now available at the Rio 2016 website. 70 percent of tickets are reserved for Brazilians and 30 percent for nonresidents who will need to register and buy tickets in their own countries.
  • The Rio Olympics will use mostly existing and temporary venues, building only six entirely new sites for the 28 sports showcased.
  • According to the organizing committee, half of all tickets will cost under 30 U.S. dollars and more than one million sports fans will be able to watch competitions for free in venues like this one-Rio’s famous Copacabana beach, that will host the open water marathon.
