Greece criticized for handling of migrant situation

Global Business

More than 200,000 refugees and migrants have reached Europe through Greece this year. And 2,000 more are arriving each day. As CCTV’s Filio Kontrafouri reports from Athens, the government is warning it needs more help from the EU.

More details:

  • According to EU law, all migrants and refugees entering Europe without a visa must be documented and finger-printed at the country of arrival. There they must also file for asylum.
  • Greece’s caretaker government has been trying to assist local communities on many of the Greek islands to at least provide food and shelter.
  • The European Union has pledged to help. Greece says it needs some 800 million dollars.

Refugees face hardships from Bodrum on way to Greece
Hasan and his family of 12 from Aleppo in Syria have been living in the Bodrum central bazaar for a couple of months now. Their dreams of a better life in Europe were shattered when a trafficker stole their life savings. CCTV’s Natalie Carney filed this report.

More details:

  • The agents or smugglers have been known to overload, reuse boats and leave the responsibility of life vests to the passengers, in order to cut costs. But this has had deadly consequences.
  • It’s not just the traffickers making the money. The supplies needed for the illegal crossings have helped other businesses too.

Proposal to boost amount of refugees to EU countries resisted

EU Interior Ministers have failed to make significant progress on a plan that would have boosted the number of refugees resettled, even as more countries followed Germany’s lead in re-introducing border controls. CCTV’s Jack Barton filed this report from Brussels.
