The forced resignation and arrest of President Otto Perez Molina of Guatemala, followed the departure of many others in his administration. In addition to Vice President Roxana Baldetti, several of his cabinet members, secretaries and ministers also resigned. All of this indicates the seriousness of the political crisis facing Guatemala.
Americas Now anchor Elaine Reyes is joined by CCTV political analyst Laura Carlsen to discuss the situation. Laura tells us about the evidence the corruption investigators compiled against the government that led to the indictments. She also talks about corruption taking place in other parts of Latin America.
Elaine and Laura discuss a report released by the United Nations this year which states that 25% of political campaign funds in Guatemala originate from criminal groups.
Indeed, the country of 16 million is dealing with more than political corruption. It has one of the highest crime rates in Central America according to the Guatemala 2015 Crime and Safety Report.
