Bei Bei was born Aug.22,2015. He has much more distinct black-and-white markings. Zoo officials say the markings on his back closely resemble those of his father, Tian Tian.
The panda and a twin were born, but the smaller of the pair was visibly weaker and died four days later despite constant care efforts at the zoo.
Bei Bei was named by first ladies Peng Liyuan of China and Michelle Obama on Sep.25 in Washington, D.C.
It was the name printed on the two yellow rolled scrolls the first ladies untied in front of a crowd of children. The name on Peng’s was written in Mandarin Chinese; Obama’s was its English translation. Pronounced “bay bay,” the name means “precious treasure.”
