China’s top political advisory body concludes annual session

The Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Yu Zhengsheng, on Monday addressed members of China’s top political advisory body, vowing to continue efforts to build a moderately prosperous society.

Yu’s remarks came as he presided over the closing meeting of the annual session of the CPPCC at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

“We must give advice and support the development during the 13th Five-Year Plan period [2016-2020], making it our major task,” Yu said.

“We will implement the five development concepts of innovation, coordination, green, openness and sharing, focus on issues in economic and social development, deepening reform and boosting innovation.”

The meeting also saw 2,101 CPPCC members approving the work report of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee.

During this year’s session, a total of 1,927 political advisors, accounting for 89 percent of all CPPCC members, submitted thousands of proposals, covering just about every aspect of Chinese society.

Top on the priority list are the Chinese economy and the government’s vision of reforms, such as supply-side structural reform, poverty alleviation and encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship.

A total of 1,783 proposals, roughly 42 percent of the accepted proposals, were focused on the economy. The next most important subject was social development, with 1,334 proposals.

During the two-week-long session, CPPCC members actively attended plenary meetings and discussion meetings, focusing on a range of issues and offering vital inputs for the drafting of the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan.
