A talented archer aims for Olympic gold

A young archer named Marcus Vinicius d’Almeida is one of Brazil’s strongest hopes for a medal this year at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Marcus is this week’s featured athlete for our “Olympians” segment on “Americas Now.”

The bow and arrow have been around since ancient civilization, used as both a weapon as well as for sport.

Archery was a favorite pastime of the Zhou Dynasty in China (1027-256 BC) and the pharaohs of Egypt.

Archery has also been a featured Olympic Game since 1900.

Marcus Vinicius d’Almeida is considered a prodigy in the sport of Archery. He rose to fame during the 2014 World Cup. There he came in second place at just 16 years old.

Marcus has benefited from a global team. A South Korean coach hired by the Brazilian archery federation first spotted him when he was 14. He became youth world champion under the direction of an English coach. And he is currently working with an Italian trainer.
