Venezuela is a divided nation and in the grip of one of the most critical times in its history. For months there has been widespread social unrest across the country as protesters face off with police and the National Guard on a daily basis.
Protesters want the country’s president, Nicolas Maduro, removed from office and new elections held. President Maduro wants to replace the National Assembly with a new constitutional assembly.
The streets of the country’s capital have been clogged with demonstrations, many of which have turned violent. Over 60 people have died in the clashes which were brought on by a collapsing economy. So how did Venezuela get to this point? Elaine Reyes has this timeline of events.
