History of US-DPRK diplomatic relations

Digital Originals

In 2009, former President Clinton made a surprise visit to the DPRK where he met with then-leader Kim Jong Il and successfully negotiated the release of two American journalists.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong Un will meet on February 27 and 28, 2019. The February meeting comes after a meeting between the two leaders in Singapore in 2018.

That meeting was the first time a sitting U.S. president ever met with a leader from the DPRK.

However, it is not the first time there have been high-level meetings between the two countries.
