According to the World Health Organization, every year up to 650,000 people die of seasonal influenza globally.
There is a flu vaccine, but its efficacy varies from year to year. Scientists have long yearned to create a so-called “universal” flu vaccine that could provide protection against a multitude of strains.
That has so far eluded them, but hope is mounting that the technology used in developing mRNA COVID-19 vaccines can be harnessed to create a better flu shot.
