Brazilians celebrate New Year’s in Rio despite COVID-19 surge

While most of Brazil’s cities have cancelled end of the year celebrations over growing concerns posed by the COVID-19 Omicron variant, Rio de Janeiro’s famed New Year’s Eve festivities will go ahead with scaled back events.

The city’s authorities have announced several precautionary measures to avoid mass gatherings, but health experts are calling for caution because of the potential for the virus to spread during the party is very high.
