Amid the ongoing political turmoil in Peru, a new diplomatic spat has broken out with Mexico over the latter’s decision to grant asylum to the family of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi announced on Wednesday that the Mexican Ambassador to Peru Pablo Monroy Conesa has been declared persona non-grata, adding that the diplomat had 72 hours to depart from the South American nation.
Mexico responded to the move by stating that their decision to grant asylum to Castillo’s family was due to the country’s policy to give refuge to whomever that seeks it.
