A new coronavirus variant is spreading rapidly in the United States as hospitalizations and deaths are once again on the rise.

In December, it went from accounting for just 4% percent of U.S. cases at the beginning of the month to 41% by the end of the month.

By some estimates is it now the dominant strain.
