It’s been 12 years since an earthquake and a tsunami damaged cooling systems at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, causing three reactors to melt and release large amounts of radiation. As part of Japan’s decommissioning strategy, the nuclear plant will be discharging treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean starting this year.
Despite the government’s assurances of safety, the announcement provoked concerns among local fishermen, neighboring China, South Korea, and even communities on the other side of the Pacific on the US west coast. CGTN’s Ediz Tiyansan reports.
