U.S. state legislatures debate real estate bans for foreign nationals

There are more than a dozen bills being debated in state legislatures across the United States that would restrict some foreign nationals from owning land.

Many of the proposals focus on those from China.

Proponents say new laws are needed to protect national security – pointing to several large land purchases near military bases.

But members of the Chinese community are crying foul – saying the bills are xenophobic and could inflame anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S.
