Despite opposition from activists and governments around the world, Japan has started releasing treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Twelve years ago, the facility was hit by an earthquake and a tsunami that damaged cooling systems and caused three reactors to melt and release large amounts of radiation.

The move to discharge treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean has angered environmentalists worldwide, including neighboring China, and even communities on the other side of the Pacific on the U.S. west coast.
