The latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau shows the poverty rate rose to 12.4 percent in 2022 in what appears to be the largest one-year jump on record. 

The revelation comes as living costs have gone up along with inflation, at a time when federal programs that provided aid to families during the COVID-19 pandemic have expired.
