There are many options for upgrades on a flight – but all these extras cost money. Flyers are opening their wallets to pay extra for what used to be the minimum, like seat selection, meal service, or baggage allowance.

There’s a theory the airlines employ a business strategy designed to make passengers less comfortable just so they’ll fork out funds for these upgrades.
