Uranium mining threatens indigenous communities in America’s Southwest

Following an agreement at the COP28 climate summit last year to triple nuclear energy production to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there’s been a global shift to nuclear plants.

Earlier this month, the largest uranium producer in the United States, resumed its extraction in three mines located near Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park, for the first time in eight years.

But indigenous groups, living on protected lands nearby, are once again worried about losing their natural resources.
