Full Frame: Understanding AI

Innovations in artificial intelligence are changing how we do things in almost every field. But this technology comes with concerns about job displacement, data privacy and biased decision-making.

Kartik Hosanagar is Professor and Co-Director of AI at Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania. He’s also the author of A Human’s Guide to Machine Intelligence: How Algorithms Are Shaping Our Lives and How We Can Stay in Control.

A lot of people feel like AI is this esoteric thing that I hear about in the news. It doesn’t affect me, my life….And I wanted to bust that myth a little bit because it’s not true and AI is actually all around us,” Hosanagar said.

The language of AI

One important component of artificial intelligence is language. AI powers applications such as speech recognition, machine translation and virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa.

Daniela Braga is the founder and CEO of Defined.ai, one of the fastest-growing start-ups in this AI space.

AI is translating how we communicate, whether it’s by voice, by writing, by the way we perceive the world, how we see and understand the world, how we hear, all our senses. It’s what AI is replicating, really,” Braga said.

Saving energy costs

One factory in China equipped with robots is able to produce cellphones and services. And it’s about to do it while being completely in the dark. With the help of AI, the factory is able to save energy and cut costs.
