Life in Northern Haiti Amidst Rising Challenges

Americas Now

In northern Haiti, Cap-Haitien has managed to avoid much of the violence that has engulfed Port-au-Prince. However, life in this region is far from easy. Since President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination in 2021, the decreased presence of the state has led to numerous difficulties for local residents.

Political instability and reduced governmental support have created an environment where basic services are hard to come by. Residents of Cap-Haitien face increased challenges in their daily lives, from accessing clean water and healthcare to maintaining security and economic stability.

Many Haitians have attempted to cross into the Dominican Republic or venture to the United States in search of better opportunities and safety. Yet, for those who remain in northern Haiti, the struggle continues as they navigate the complexities of life in a region that feels increasingly neglected by the central government.

Dan Collyns provides an on-the-ground report that captures Cap-Haitien’s people’s resilience as they cope with these rising challenges.
